On the night of March 30, 2023, anonymous bitcoiners drove a high-output projector to the foot of the European Central Bank headquarters in Frankfurt and lit up the building. The projection was simple. The bitcoin logo, in orange. Two words beneath it, in white sans-serif: STUDY BITCOIN. The image was photographed, posted to X, and propagated across bitcoin Twitter within hours. Bitcoin Magazine ran the photograph at the top of its feed. Cointelegraph compared the projection to the Bat-Signal — Gotham’s call to its protector, repurposed by Frankfurt’s dissidents as a call to its central bank. The framing was apt. The European Central Bank had spent the prior two years issuing public warnings about bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, with ECB President Christine Lagarde describing bitcoin as a risky speculative asset and recommending banks limit their exposure. The projection was the response.

The artifact has two layers, both worth recording.

The first layer is the projection event itself: a piece of guerrilla iconography in the cypherpunk tradition, anonymous in execution and citizen-funded in its production, deploying a five-thousand-dollar projector against a one-point-three-billion-euro institutional headquarters. The asymmetry is the point. The projection cannot damage the building. It cannot interfere with monetary policy. It cannot affect the digital-euro working group. What it can do is make the building, for one night, photograph differently. It can make the European Central Bank, the institution most actively positioned in 2023 against decentralized currency, briefly wear bitcoin’s logo. Within the genre of bitcoin protest art, the piece is unusually disciplined. There is no slogan beyond the instruction. There is no insult, no defacement, no claim. There is only the logo and the imperative. The protest is pedagogical. It does not ask the bank to capitulate. It asks the bank to read.

The second layer is the phrase. Study bitcoin had been in casual circulation among bitcoiners for years before the projection — deployed in replies to skeptics, deployed by orange-pillers to newcomers, deployed by maximalists as the answer to almost any objection. The phrase is the maxi alternative to evangelism. It does not say buy bitcoin. It does not say believe me. It says: do the work yourself, examine the protocol, read the foundational texts, run a node if you want to, and reach your own conclusions. It is a phrase consistent with the catalog’s editorial register — reluctant, declarative, allergic to persuasion. The projection took that diffuse community phrase and gave it a date, a location, an image, and a public reading. After March 30, 2023, study bitcoin was no longer just a thing bitcoiners said. It was a thing bitcoiners had said to the European Central Bank, in lights, on the building.

A second projection appeared on the ECB on November 30, 2023. The format was similar. The propagation was similar. The first event remained the iconographic moment because it was the first; the second confirmed that the first had not been a single stunt. The bitcoin logo on the ECB had become a reusable cultural gesture, available for redeployment whenever the institution did something the bitcoin community wished to comment on.

What study bitcoin shares with the other guerrilla iconography in the catalog — the Skull of Satoshi inverted into bitcoin acceptance within forty-eight hours, the Bitcoin Sign Guy photobombing Janet Yellen’s congressional testimony, Casascius coins as physical-world artifact — is the claim that bitcoin culture does not need the institution’s permission to occupy public space. The protocol is permissionless. The image of the protocol can be permissioned only by force, and only briefly. A central bank that wishes to dim the bitcoin logo on its facade has to find the projector. The projector is small. The bank is large. The asymmetry runs the wrong direction for the bank.

The phrase had been a community instruction for years. On one night in March 2023, it was also a building.
